Kiana is building her career in the food and hospitality industry through an apprenticeship

Apprenticeship and traineeship stories

Kiana - Apprentice Chef

Kiana has dreams of using her skills as a chef and working while travelling all over the world. Currently undertaking a Certificate III in Commercial Cookery, these dreams might not be all that far away.

While working as kitchen hand at Seafaring Fools in Glenelg, South Australia, Kiana was encouraged by her boss and parents to take the next step and undertake an apprenticeship after finishing school.

A typical workday for Kiana’s work includes a lot of prep to get the kitchen rolling, such as making burger patties, salad dressings, and sauces, as well as baking for the cake fridge. This is amongst working through all of the orders that are received during the day, and a lot of cleaning and keeping things in good order – but that’s all part of the fun.

Some of Kiana’s proudest moments have been the Chef’s Table nights, where groups of people come into the café for a full three-course meal. Kiana is really proud of these events and finds it rewarding seeing people enjoy the food she’s created.

For someone considering a career in the kitchen, Kiana’s advice is to go for it – even if you have no previous experience, there are people who will lead you and show you the way, and it can be a really gratifying career path. It also helps if you’re on the organised side, – it’s important to not run out of food!

Kiana's apprenticeship and work experience are building her skills both in the kitchen and in life. Kiana is looking forward to completing her apprenticeship, being fully qualified and opening a restaurant or café of her own.
